The Eye Redux
It's also boring. I spent most of the time holding back a scream of "Move faster!" or "Do something already." The trailer is even worse than I described in my review. If you watch the trailer you know exactly what is going to happen at the climax. They actually show the freaking climax in the trailer. So, while you may not know that you're seeing it while watching the trailer, or for most of the movie. Once, the movie nears the penultimate scene you know exactly what is going to happen. I couldn't believe it. It took any suspense out of the picture. I'm also going to reveal the plot in this review, so you have been warned. The movie opens with a girl hanging herself. Then we get the trailer set up with Jessica Alba as a blind violinist. I think the set up in the movie is faster than the trailer. She's opening her eyes from the operation soon after the opening credits finish. The first night after recovering from surgery she sees the blurry image of her hospital roommate getting up with another figure. She follows it out into the hall where we get a scare. The next morning we learn the woman is dead. She sees dead people. And literally about halfway through the movie we hear "I see dead people." I couldn't believe my ears. Far into the film when everyone in the audience already knows that she's seeing dead people, she walks through someone on the street. She's surprised by this, but she sees a hit-and-run accident up the street. I knew that the dead person on the ground is the ghost that just walked through her, so why does it take her five minutes to slowly walk over to the scene of the accident for it to be revealed? "Come on already" was the note I made. Further into the movie they try to give a scientific explanation for her seeing dead people. It's "cellular memory." She's seeing the visions of the person's eyes she has been given. I've skipped many the early scenes already. They're not interesting. There are a few jumps, but nothing gory or creepy. It feels stretched. Like the trailer, too much time is spent establishing that she sees dead people. Finally, she's shown a picture of herself, but she doesn't recognize the person. In the mirror she sees the donor of her eyes not herself. Finally, the doctor and Jessica, in a breach of confidentiality, head to Mexico to find the donor. There Jessica finds the donor's mother, and learns the girl could see the upcoming death of people. The daughter tried to save people from a factory fire, but they didn't heed her warnings and died. The mother has a heart attack (foreseen by Jessica), and Jessica interacts with the dead girl while the doctor runs the mom to the hospital to die. Finally, they're sitting at the border. There's some car chase on the US side so there are many cars backed up. Jessica gets it now. This is her vision. She needs to save these people like the girl in Mexico couldn't. Of course, she saves the people in line from the exploding gas truck (as seen in the trailer), and the glass flies into her eyes blinding her again (as seen in the trailer).
Then we get some warm and fuzzy speech from Jessica about how see needs to embrace her gift. Oh brother. How did I do on my ending prediction? Here's what I said: I'll guess the doctor knew where the eyes came from and he's in on the plot. The people from her visions are aggrieved ghosts looking for justice. Alba will get justice for them by exposing the doctor, but will lose her sight again.I was wrong about the doctor. He was a jerk, but it wasn't a conspiracy (which would've been far more interesting), but Jessica does get justice for the donor by saving lives. She does lose her sight again, which from the trailer was a no-brainer. I did 50-50 on the prediction, which isn't so great. I was spot on with my conclusions on the movie: "…this one is going to be a snooze fest. Alba can't act, and the lame premise is well, lame." I can't improve on that statement.
