Terminator Salvation In-depth Redux I've been waiting for this movie for a long time. In the earlier movies, we only got glimpses of the world after Judgment Day. By the third movie, the formula was played out. Terminator sent back to kill John and Sarah Connor. Yawn. With Terminator Salvation, we were finally going to get something new. Unfortunately, Terminator Salvation has a few cool action sequences, but that's about it. It's full of depressing characters, in a depressing landscape, doing predictable and nonsensical things. Add in bad direction and bad editing, and you've got a movie that isn't worth seeing. This movie was not fun. The characters were depressing. I guess in a post-apocalyptic war for the survival of the human race, you don't expect a lot of smiles, but someone has to have a sense of humor still. I kept thinking we need The Joker here to tell John Connor, "Why so serious?" The tributes to the previous movies in the series elicited applause from the audience, but they seemed even more ham handed than the ones in Star Trek. They seemed tacked on and interrupted the flow of the movie. Speaking of flow, there were a lot of WTF moments. Characters doing thing that didn't make any sense. Machines doing things that didn't make sense. For example, near the end (this isn't a spoiler), John Connor is battling a terminator. Then it cuts away. When we return to Connor, he's inexplicably escaped from the terminator and is hiding. WTF? How did he get there. Lots of bad editing like that. A couple scenes just seemed slapped together without a sense of transition. For one transition, I thought it was a glitch in the projector, but it wasn't. You'd think a movie with as big a budget as this wouldn't have mistakes like that. The direction was subpar. During every non-action scene, I felt as if I were watching a staged scene. I want to be drawn into the movie world, not feel like I'm watching actors doing a scene. As for the acting, it was terrible. The only actor that really did anything for me was the Marcus Wright character. Everyone else sucked, especially the actors in the submarine. I cringed every time those guys appeared on the screen. How did I do on my predictions? In my trailer review I said: As I mentioned, they're advertising the sequel in the trailer, so the ending won't be conclusive. John Connor will survive, but the battle will not end as he proclaims in the trailer. I didn't really go out on a limb with this one, so it's not surprising I was spot on. No big reward for me. I've revised my recommendation on the Trailer Review page. You really shouldn't see this one. Here's hoping someone else takes the helm for the sequel, and gives us the post-Judgement Day terminator movie we've been waiting for. That's all I've got for now. Stay geeky!
