Processor Choice
I need to determine which processor I want to go with before I can choose memory, video card, mobo and just about anything else for this new bad boy, so we better get to it. After the amount of feedback I got on hard drives, I’m emptying my inbox for the onslaught of CPU opinions.

What should it be, AMD or Intel? To be more specific, I'm looking at a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64. The P4 has hyperthreading while the Athlon 64 is 64-bit. The P4 motherboards have PCI-express available which provides some future-proofing, but I'm not sure that should be much of a deciding factor for me since it's been 3.5 years since my last upgrade.

To get an idea of what this system will be used for. Most of the time my computer will be used for standard web-design applications. I usually have at least 5 or 6 programs running at the same time, and multiple browser windows. I will be editing my vacation videos, but that will be like once a year at the most. Unlike my current system, the new box will be able to play the latest games, and I plan to take advantage of that. However, I'm fooling myself if I think large blocks of time are going to open up for me to become categorized as an "avid gamer".

Even after I decide to go with AMD or Intel there will be choices within the P4 and Athlon 64 family. Either way I go, I'm going to see a huge performance increase over my 800 MHz Duron. Tell me what you think. Filed under Musings by Brian - Mon Sep 27, 2004 @ 12:00 AM (Permalink - Discuss)
