Acer Aspire AS5517-5358 Laptop

The CPU is a dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 model TK-42.  This is a 64-bit processor operating at 1.6 GHz.  It has 1 MB of L2 cache and a 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB).  This CPU performs comparable to an Intel Core Duo T2400 which puts in the lower side of the mid-range CPUs.  The laptop comes with 4 GB of DDR2 memory which is the maximum this computer can support, so you should make sure that’ll be enough for you before buying it.

The screen is a 15.6″ HD widescreen Acer CineCrystal™ LCD display with a resolution of 1366×768.  This is a glossy display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.  The screen is powered by the ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 GPU.  This GPU comes with up to 1919MB of HyperMemory™ (256MB dedicated and 1663MB shared system memory).  That dedicated memory will help out graphics performance without slowing down the rest of the system.

For storage you get the standard 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 5400 RPM.  Bigger and faster would always be better, but this should be adequate for most needs.  The optical drive is a Super Multi Double-Layer DVD drive so reading and writing DVDs and CDs is no problem.

There’s no modem on this system (amen), but you can still get online.  There the RJ-45 Ethernet connector which provides a 10/100 Mbps connection, or the Acer InviLink 802.11b/g wireless LAN for sitting at Starbucks and working on the next great American novel.

The 5-in-1 card reader can read Memory Stick, xD, Memory Stick PRO, Multi Media Card, and Secure Digital cards. The choice of external ports is pretty sparse with only 2 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, 1 VGA port for external monitor, 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone in port. It also has a Kensington security lock slot.

The system comes with Hi-Definition (HD) audio support for the integrated stereo speakers. A standard webcam and integrated microphone make video chatting on Skype easy enough. The user interface is a 99-key full-size keyboard, independent numeric keypad with international language support, 8 function, four cursor, two Microsoft® Windows® keys, WLAN, touchpad lock easy-launch button, Play/pause, stop, previous, next media keys printed on keyboard and a Touchpad pointing device.

The laptop comes installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit. Other software includes Acer® eRecovery Management, Acer® GameZone , Acer® GridVista, Acer® Launch Manager, Adobe® Acrobat® Reader, McAfee® Internet Security Suite (trial version), Microsoft® Works 8.5 (full version), Microsoft® Office Home & Student 2007 (60-day trial),  and NTI Media Maker™.

The system measures 14.7″ W x 9.7″ D x 1.1″ – 1.6” H and weighs 6 pounds.  The Six-cell lithium ion battery can provide up to 2.5 hours of power before you need to plug it into the wall with the included 65 W AC adapter.

The cer Aspire AS5517-5358 notebook can be found for around $500.
