Acer Aspire AS7540-1317 17.3″ Laptop

The Acer Aspire laptop (model#: AS7540-1317) has a 17.3″ LCD display and an AMD Athlon II Dual-Core processor.Acer Aspire AS7540 1317 17.3 Laptop

This laptop is powered by the dual-core AMD Turion II processor (M300).   This is a 64-bit dual-core processor running at 2.0 GHz. It has 1 MB of L2 cache and the front-side bus runs at 800 MHz. This CPU is specifically designed for laptop computers.  The system comes with 4GB DDR2 667MHz memory, which provides enough memory for multi-tasking on the two processing cores.

The display is a 17.3-inch CineCrystal LED-backlit widescreen display with 1600 x 900-pixel resolution (native 720p for high-definition viewing).  Its widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio is designed to present websites without lots of left-right scrolling and DVD movies without black bars taking up most of the screen.

You can put your DVDs in the 8x SuperMulti DVD±R/RW drive which can also write to CD, DVD-RAM, and dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs. The hard drive is a 320 GB Serial ATA hard drive rotating at 5400 RPM.  I would’ve liked to see a 500 GB drive, but this still should be enough for most people looking at a value laptop.

The screen is driven by the ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics chip which has 256 MB of dedicated video memory. It has 40 stream processors and 128-bit floating point precision for all operations. It provides up to 1919 MB of total shared system memory and supports Microsoft DirectX 10.1 for gaming compatibility.

Networking is provided by the built-in 802.11 (b/g/n) wireless adapter.  The draft n specification provides faster networking and wider range from wireless n routers.  For wired networking (preferred for online gaming) the system comes with a built-in gigabit (10/100/1000) Ethernet port (RJ-45 standard connector).

The Crystal Eye webcam supports Acer PrimaLite technology which provides better support for low-light conditions.  Perfect for when you want to Skype in the dark with the built-in microphone.

When you want to crank up the volume, you can use the built-in speakers which include Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Headphone, Dolby Natural Bass, and Dolby Sound Space enhancer technologies.

Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of Web sites such as Google Earth. It also has a full-sized keyboard with an integrated numeric keypad for easy data entry.

External ports include 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports for connecting printers and other peripherals, 1 VGA port for external monitor, 1 HDMI port for connecting to your HDTV, 1 V.92 56K modem port, 1  headphones/speaker/line-out jack with S/PDIF support, 1 microphone-in jack, and 1 line-in jack.

Use the 5-in-1 card reader to read a MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO or xD-Picture Card from your digital camera or camcorder.

The system comes installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as the operating system.  Other software installed includes Microsoft Works SE 9.0 for word processing and spreadsheet work, 60-day trial version of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, McAfee Internet Security Suite (trial version), NTI Media Maker, Google Toolbar, Acer Recovery Management, Acer GridVista,  Norton Online Backup, and MyWinLocker.

The 6-cell lithium-ion batter pack (4400 mAH) powers the laptop for up to 2.5 hours. The dimensions are 16.18 x 10.78 x 1.77 inches (WxDxH) and the weight is 7.19 pounds, which puts it in the category of laptops you don’t want to carry around with you on campus and just to move from room to room in the house.

You can find this laptop for around $580 or for rent at Rent-a-Center.
