The notebook is powered by an Intel Pentium (T4400) chip.  The T4400 is a dual-core processor with each core running at 2.2 GHz.  It’s a 64-bit processor with 1 MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz front-side bus. The dual core CPU provides 2 processing threads, so multitasking can be accomplished much more smoothly than a single-core system.  The computer comes installed with 3 GB of DDR2 (667 MHz) memory with support for a maximum of 4 GB.

The display is a 17.3-inch CineCrystal HD LED-backlit display with a resolution of 1600 x 900.  A perfect size for watching those DVDs.  The screen is driven by the Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M chip.  The chip has no dedicated graphics memory, but takes dynamically an amount from the main memory (up to 1695 MB). The chip is compatible with Microsoft DirectX 10.

You get a 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 5400 RPM.  Slow for a desktop replacement, but it’s a good size for all your music, movies, games and apps.   The optical drive is a 8X DVD Super Multi Double-Layer Drive which lets you play and create CDs and DVDs.

For connectivity you get a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet port (RJ-45).  Connect wirelessly to a WiFi network or hotspot with built-in Acer InviLink 802.11b/g/draft-n WLAN adapter.  The  56K ITU V.92 with PTT Approval Fax/Modem to connect to those old-school BBSes that are still functioning.

Use the integrated webcam and microphone to set up those video chat sessions with friends and family, or even a random stranger on chatroulette. Download your digital pictures from your camera using the Multi-in-1 card reader slot which supports Secure Digital card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO or xD-Picture Card.  Other external ports include 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, 1 HDMI port for connecting to your HD TV, 1  VGA port for connecting an external computer monitor, 1  headphone/speaker/line-out jack with S/PDIF support, 1 microphone-in jack, 1 line-in jack,  and 1 Kensington lock slot.

The 6-cell Lithium ion battery pack provides up to 3.5 hours of unplugged power.  The system measures 16.2″  W x 10.8″  D x 1.6″ – 1.8” H and weighs 7.1 lbs, so you don’t want to be lugging it around very far.

The operating system installed is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit version.  Other software includes Microsoft Works with Office Home and Student 2007 Trial, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009 Trial, Acer Backup Manager, Acer Crystal Eye, Acer eRecovery Management, Acer GridVista, Acer Launch Manager, Acer PowerSmart Manager, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Flash Player, eSobi, Google Toolbar, McAfee Internet Security Suite (trial version), MyWinLocker, Norton Online Backup, NTI Media Maker, Oberon Gamezone, and WildTangent.

TheAcer Aspire laptop (model: AS7736Z-4088) can be found for around $500 at time of review.
