Asus G73JH-RBBX09 Laptop with Intel Core i7 Processor

The Asus G73JH-RBBX09 laptop comes from the company’s high-performance G line of laptops.  It has a Intel Core i7 processor and a 17.3″ display. This is the same laptop as the G73JH-RBBX05, but with a larger hard drive and more memory.

Inside is the Intel Core i7 (720QM) running at 1.6 GHz with a 1333 MHz system bus.  This is a quad-core processor with 8 processing threads.  It normally runs at 1.6GHz, but can turbo up to 2.8 GHz when needed using Intel’s TurboBoost techology.  It’s a 64-bit CPU with 6 MB of Intel SmartCache (L3). It was built using a 45 nm process. The laptop uses the Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset. You get 8 GB of 1066MHz DDR3 memory for your multitasking which is the max this one can have.

The screen is a 17.3″ LED-LCD high-definition plus widescreen display with 1600 x 900 resolution.  A big display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and native support for 720p.  The display is driven by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics engine.  It has 1GB GDDR5 dedicated video memory to avoid system slowdowns.  This GPU offers support for Microsoft DirectX 11 and OpenGL 3.2 for maximum compatibility with today’s  and tomorrow’s games.  The clock speed on the graphics engine is 850 MHz.

For storage there is a 1 TB (1000 GB) hard drive running at 7200 RPM.  This is a huge drive and should take care of all your needs unless you plan on using this as a server for Google.  The optical drive is a Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support. For speakers you get 3D Audio with EAX Advanced HD 4.0 on stereo speakers.

For networking you get an RJ-45 port for 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet for you wired network people.  For wireless you can use the Wi-Fi® Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n) adapter. Unfortunately, this system does not come with Bluetooth support.

To import your pictures from your digital camera you can use the 8-in-1 media reader that supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, SmartMedia and xD-Picture Card formats. Other external ports include 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, 1 HDMI port for connecting your HDTV, 1 VGA port for an external monitor, 1 headphone out jack, and 1 microphone in jack.  The system also comes with a built-in microphone to use with the 1.3 megapixel webcam.

For stability, you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system.  Other software includes Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0,  NERO 8 Essentials, Power2Go, Trend Micro Internet Security 2009/2010, ASUS SmartLogon, Asus Power4Gear Hybrid, Asus Live Update, Asus NB Probe +, ASUS Life Frame 3, ASUS Wireless Console , Virtual Camera,  ASUS Splendid, ASUS Hotkey, ASUS Express Gate, Asus Screen Saver, Fancy Start, eManual and AI Recovery.

The system is powered by a 5200 mAh 8-cell Lithium ion battery back, or a 150 W AC adapter. The system measures 12.6″ x 16.3″ x 2.2″ and weighs 7.5 pounds.  Certainly not a laptop you want to hike the Appalachian Trail with.

The Asus G73JH-RBBX09 laptop can be found for around $1600. That’s $400 more than the RBBX05 for 500 GB more in hard drive space and 2 GB of memory, not worth it in my opinion.
