Inside is the Intel Core i7 (720QM) running at 1.6 GHz with a 1333 MHz system bus.  This is a quad-core processor with 8 processing threads.  It normally runs at 1.6GHz, but can turbo up to 2.8 GHz when needed using Intel’s TurboBoost techology.  It’s a 64-bit CPU with 6 MB of Intel SmartCache (L3). It was built using a 45 nm process. The laptop uses the Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset. You get 4 GB of 1066MHz DDR3 memory for your multitasking, with the ability to upgrade to 8GB.

The screen is a 17.3″ LED-LCD high-definition plus widescreen display with 1600 x 900 resolution.  A big display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and native support for 720p.  This laptop doesn’t skimp on the graphics power it has an ATI Discrete Graphics Engine (DGE) powered by Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics with 1GB DDR3 (800 MHz) VRAM and DirectX 11 and Open GL 3.2 support for the latest games. The graphics engine clock speed is 650 MHz and it has a pixel fill rate of 5.2 Gigapixels/sec.

For storage there is a 640 GB hard drive running at 7200 RPM.  About the best drive you’ll find in a laptop these days.  The optical drive is a multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support. To import your pictures from your digital camera you can use the 8-in-1 media reader that supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, SmartMedia and xD-Picture Card formats.

For networking you get an RJ-45 port for 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet for you wired network people.  For wireless you can use the Wi-Fi® Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n) adapter. This laptop also has support for Bluetooth 2.1.

Other external ports include 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports (1 is an eSATA/USB combo port), 1 HDMI port for connecting your HDTV, 1 VGA port for an external monitor, 1 ExpresCard port, 1 headphone out jack, and 1 microphone in jack.  The system also comes with a built-in microphone to use with the 1.3 megapixel webcam for easy video chatting.

For stability, you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system.  Other software includes Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0,  NERO 8 Essentials, Power2Go, Trend Micro Internet Security 2009/2010, ASUS SmartLogon, Asus Power4Gear Hybrid, Asus Live Update, Asus NB Probe +, ASUS Life Frame 3, ASUS Wireless Console , Virtual Camera,  ASUS Splendid, ASUS Hotkey, ASUS Express Gate, Asus Screen Saver, Fancy Start, eManual and AI Recovery.

The system is powered by a 6-cell Lithium ion battery back. The system measures 12.4″ x 18.4″ x 1.8″ and weighs 9.3 pounds, so consider this one a desktop replacement.

The ASUS N71JQ-X2 laptop can be found for around $1200.
