Gateway NV5214U Laptop

Under the hood this laptop has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 (QL-64) dual-core CPU.  This is a 64-bit processor that operates at 2.1 GHz.   It has 1 MB L2 cache at a 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB).   The performance of this chip is similar to the Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 chip.  The notebook comes with 4GB of  Dual-Channel DDR2 sDRAM which is the maximum amount of memory supported.

The screen is a 15.6″ HD WXGA Ultrabright™ LED-backlit display with a resolution of 1366×768.  It has a glossy finish and a 16:9 aspect ratio making it good for watching movies.  Driving the display is the ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 Graphics system.  This chip can use up to 1919MB of HyperMemory™ supporting Shader Model 4.0 and Microsoft® DirectX® 10 with AMD RS780MN Chipset.  This is shared memory, so expect some slowdowns on graphically intensive tasks like games.

The hard drive is a 320 GB Toshiba Serial ATA (SATA) drive rotating at 5400 RPM.  This is a good size that should be adequate for your digital pictures, apps and more.  The optical drive is a 8x DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer drive supporting CDs up to 24x and dual layer support for DVDs.

A triple-shot of online options.  First, is the antiquated 56K ITU V.92 ready Fax/Modem for people living in rural areas or still haven’t discovered high-speed Internet yet.  The wireless option is a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi CERTIFIED® adapter, so you can walk wider with better speed using an “n” supporting router.  The wired option is a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN with a standard RJ-45 port.

The card reader works with Secure Digital™, MultiMediaCard™, Reduced-Size MultiMediaCard™, Memory Stick™, MemoryStick Pro™ and xD-Picture Card.  Other external ports include 4 high-speed USB ports, 1 VGA external monitor port, an HDMI port for connecting to your HDTV, 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone input, and a Kensington security lock slot. It also has an integrated webcam and microphone for video chatting.

For sound you get built-in stereo speakers with high-definition audio support. The keyboard is a full-size keyboard. The pointing device is a Synaptics Touchpad with Vertical Scroll.

This system comes installed with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (64-bit) with SP1.  Other software includes Cyberlink® DVD Solution™ featuring PowerDVD™ and Power2 Go™, Adobe® Reader®, Adobe® Flash® Reader, Gateway MyBackup Solution, Gateway Recovery Management, Microsoft® Works, Microsoft® Windows Live™ Essentials & Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007 (60-day complimentary trial period), and Norton Internet Security™ 2009 (60-day trial).

The system measures 3.97″ (H) x 16.6″ (W) x 12.4″ (D) or 101mm (H) and weighs 6.82 which puts it a bit on the heavy side.  Power is provided by the 6-Cell Lithium Ion (4400 mAh) battery pack, or the included AC adapter.

The Gateway NV5214U notebook can be found for around $410.
