The processor is the Intel Pentium Processor model T4300 which is a dual core processor with two processing threads.  It operates at 2.1 GHz and has 1 MB of L2 cache.  The front side bus runs at 800 MHz and this is of course a 64-bit processor. The processor performs comparably to a Intel Core 2 Duo (L9600).   The notebook comes with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM which is the maximum amount this laptop can support.

The display is a 17.3” diagonal HD+ LED HP BrightView widescreen display with a max resolution of 1600×900.  The 16:9 aspect ratio makes it good for watching widescreen DVDs.  The screen is driven by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M with 1695 MB of total graphics memory. The chip has no dedicated graphics memory, but takes dynamically an amount from the main memory. The chip is compatible with Microsoft DirectX 10, but the shared memory means that it won’t perform the best on the most demanding games out today.

The system comes with a 320 GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive.  Finally, a value priced laptop with a speedy hard drive.  The size is large enough to be useful as a desktop replacement with enough room for music, movies, games, digital pictures and more. The optical drive is your standard HP-issued LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with double layer support.

This HP has the trifecta of Internet connectivity.  First, for the turtles out there, you have access to the 56KB modem. Wireless access comes from the built-in 802.11 b/g/n wifi adapter.  Wired connectivity comes from the 10/100 Ethernet (RJ-45) port. You should be able to reach the Internet wherever it’s available with those three options.

And of course this system comes with the standard webcam and microphone for video chatting, or pretending to video chat.  Also, obviously it has a 101-key compatible with full-size keyboard with integrated numeric keypad and a Touch Pad with On/Off button and dedicated vertical scroll Up/Down pad. I don’t think I mentioned the Altec Lansing speakers yet either.

Let’s talk expansion now. First there’s the 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards. Making transferring your digital photos to this beast a breeze.  But wait, there’s more, 3 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 1 headphone out, 1 microphone-in, 1 HDMI and 1 VGA (15-pin) for connecting an external monitor.

The laptop comes with Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition for the operating system. Other software includes Symantec Norton Internet Security 2010 60-day Trial, HP Assistant, HP PC Recovery, HP Advisor, Cyberlink Power DVD, Cyberlink DVD Suite, Microsoft Works,  and Microsoft Office 2007 Home & Student 60-day trial.

The notebook measures 16.24″(L) x 10.90″ (D) 1.42″(min) – 1.77″(max) (H) and weighs in at 6.72 lbs.

The HP G71-449wm laptop PC with a dual-core Intel Pentium processor can be found for around $600 at time of review.
