This laptop is powered by the AMD Turion II processor (model: M520). This is a 64-bit processor operating at 2.3 GHz. The M520 is an entry-level dual-core processor with 1 MB L2 cache and manufactured using 45 nm technology.  The system comes with 4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 RAM installed. This configuration does allow for expansion to 8 GB of RAM.

The screen is a 17.3” Diagonal HD+ LED HP BrightView widescreen display with a resolution of 1600 x 900. That’s a 16:9 aspect ratio with native support for 720p content. The screen is driven by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphics chip  with up to 18 MB of dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. Shared memory means the system could slow down during graphically intensive applications (like games). It’s a bit underpowered for a screen of this size.

For storage you get a 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 7200RPM.  A nice drive with enough space for your games, digital photos, music and more.  The optical drive is a LightScribe Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer support. If you’re into Blu-Ray movies then this laptop can play them.  The 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader supports Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards.

This laptop also features Altec Lansing speakers with SRS Premium Sound, HP Webcam with integrated digital microphone, and a 101-key compatible with full-size keyboard with integrated numeric keypad.

For networking you get a built-in 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN for your wired networking needs.  For wireless you get a 802.11b/g/n WLAN adapter, so you can walk around Borders and use their free Internet.  External ports include 4 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 4th port shared with eSATA, 2 Headphone out, 1 microphone-in, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA (15-pin), 1 eSATA + USB 2.0, 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 notebook expansion port 3, and 1 Consumer IR (Remote Receiver).

The laptop comes installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition.  Other software includes Symantec Norton Internet Security 2010 60-day Trial, HP Support Assistant, HP PC Recovery, HP Advisor, HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection, Corel PaintShop Pro Photo X2; Corel Video Studio X2, eBay, HP MediaSmart; HP Webcam, Pandora Internet Radio; Windows Live Photo Gallery, Cyberlink DVD Suite, Adobe Reader; Adobe Flash, HP Games Powered by Wild Tangent, HP Music Store powered by Rhapsody; Netflix; Hulu, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office 2007 Home & Student 60-day Trial, Microsoft Silverlight, Sun Java, HP Set Up, Windows Live Messenger; Windows Live Mail; Windows Live Writer, Skype, MSN Toolbar, Microsoft Portal and Accellor (Broadband Aggregator in HP Setup).

The laptop measures 16.2″ (W) x 10.9″ (D) x 1.37″ (min H)/1.70″ (max H) and weighs 7.69 lbs. This is not something you want to be carrying around with you.  This laptop comes with an 8-cell Lithium ion battery pack.

You can find the HP Pavilion dv7-3162nr laptop for around $650.
