Samsung QX410-J01 Laptop with Intel Core i5 Review

This laptop is powered by the Intel Core i5-460M CPU. This  is a dual-core, 64-bit processor with 4 processing threads.  The cores operating at 2.53GHz normally, but can be boosted up to 2.8GHz with TurboBoost technology.  It has 3MB of L3 cache and uses 35W.  The laptop comes with 4GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM and can be expanded to a maximum of 8GB. That’s plenty of memory for all of your multitasking needs. It uses the Mobile Intel HM55 Express Chipset.

The screen is a 14″ LED-backlit high-definition display with a resolution of 1366×768. The screen is driven by the NVIDIA GeForce 310M (Hybrid) graphics processor with 512MB of dedicated graphics memory.  The hybrid in the description means that the system will switch to the lower powered internal Intel graphics chip when the dedicated system isn’t needed.  This should result in increased battery life.

For storage you get a 640GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 5400RPM.  That’s a big drive, that has plenty of space for all your computer storage needs.  The optical drive is a multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support.  So, no Blu-Ray, but who watches DVD still?  The 4-in-1 media reader supports Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Capacity, SDXC and MultiMediaCard formats.

You can use some of that space for the integrated PVR (personal video recorder) to record some TV shows.  You also get Intel Wireless Display technology that wirelessly transmits streamed or downloaded movies, TV shows, music, photos and more from your laptop, network or the Internet to your TV (NETGEAR Push2TV adapter required, not included).

For networking you get a 10/100/1000Base-TX Ethernet LAN adapter for that Gigabit speed on your wired network.  For wireless you have two choices, you can use the 802.11 b/g/n adapter to connect to any wi-fi network, or you can use the built-in 4G WiMAX mobile broadband modem to connect to a 4G network in your area (requires a data subscription). Use those network connections with the built-in webcam and microphone for video chatting goodness.

External ports on this Samsung laptop include 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 VGA port, 1 HDMI port, 1 headphone out and 1 microphone in port.  This laptop does not come with Bluetooth support.

For software you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition installed.  Other software includes a lot of crapware, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight. Microsoft Office 2010 Starter also included (product key card required for activation; sold separately).

The laptop measures 13.7″ x 9.7″ x 1.07″ and weighs 5.07 pounds.  You get a 6 cell Lithium ion battery pack that can provide up to 7 hours of unplugged power.

You can find the Samsung QX410-J01 laptop for around $800.
