Sony VAIO VPCZ112GX-S Laptop

This notebook features the Intel Core i5 CPU (520M) running at 2.4 GHz (up to 2.93 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology).  The 520M is a 64-bit dual-core processor with 4 processing threads and 3  3 MB of L3 cache. It was built using a 32 nm process for higher efficiency.  The cores are based on the Nehalem microarchitecture, and is a good processor for multi-tasking on laptops. The laptop has 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 memory and is expandable to 8 GB.  The SO DIMMs inside this laptop run at 1066 MHz.

The screen is a 13.1″ LED-backlit widescreen display with a resolution of 1600 x 900.  The 16:9 aspect ration makes it perfect for watching movies. The display is driven by the NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU with 1 GB dedicated video memory and total available graphics memory of 2650 MB. It has support for Microsoft DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1 for gaming compatibility.  The chipset is the Mobile Intel® HM57 Express Chipset. Dedicated memory means your system can handle more intense graphical processing operations without slowing down the whole system.

This laptop has a 128 GB Solid State Drive (SSD), which means no rotating platters to get jostled around while you’re moving it around. It  limits the amount of data you can store, but 128 GB is bigger than most hard drives you found on laptops just a couple years ago.   The optical drive is a multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support.

The built-in biometric fingerprint sensor gives you an added layer of security. It comes with an integrated MOTION EYE® camera and microphone with face-tracking technology, so you can move your head around while you’re video chatting.

Networking comes in the form of an Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 (802.11a/b/g/n) wireless adapter. Wired networking is speedy with the 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet adapter.  It also comes with Bluetooth support with integrated stereo A2DP (2.1 + EDR).

The multicard media reader has one Memory Stick PRO™ (STD / Duo) media slot with MagicGate® functionality,  one ExpressCard® /34 media slot and one Secure Digital (SD memory card) media slot. Other external ports include 1 HDMI™ output, headphone jack, 1 microphone input , 1 Port Replicator Connector (Bottom), 3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, and 1 VGA port for connecting an external monitor.

This laptop is built for business with Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Edition installed. Other software includes a myriad of crap from Sony like the VAIO software experience, VAIO Care, Sony Creativity Suite, Microsoft® Works SE 9.0 w/ 60-Day Trial Version of Microsoft® Office Small Business 2007, and a useless Norton Internet Security™ 2010 30-Day Trial Offer.

The laptop measures 12.4″(W) x 1.0-1.3″(H) x 8.3″(D) and weighs only 3.4 pounds. The standard capacity Lithium ion battery pack can power this laptop for 6.5 hours.

The Sony Vaio laptop (model: VPCZ112GX/S) can be found for around $1700.
