Sony VAIO Laptop with Intel Core i7 (VPCF115FM/B)

The Sony VAIO laptop with an Intel Core i7 processor (model #: VPCF115FM/B) is a high end laptop made for movies and games.Sony VAIO Laptop with Intel Core i7 (VPCF115FM/B)

Inside is the Intel Core i7 (720QM (Clarksfield)) running at 1.6 GHz.  This is a quad-core processor with 8 processing threads.  It normally runs at 1.6GHz, but can turbo up to 2.8 GHz when needed.  It’s a 64-bit CPU with 6 MB of Intel SmartCache (L3) and built using a 45 nm process. 6 GB of DDR3 RAM comes installed on this notebook with expandability up to 8 GB.

The display is a 16.4″ high-definition widescreen display with 1920 x 1080 resolution higher resolution than you’ll find on the lower end laptops.  A resolution that will support full 1080p resolution for highest clarity on Blu-Ray movies.

Did I just say Blu-Ray? That’s right this one comes with a Blu-ray Disc-enabled DVD±RW/CD-RW drive which features read support for Blu-ray Disc. Double-layer support using compatible DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media. Also supports DVD-RAM. To use the power of the high-resolution display, and Blu-Ray drive you’re going to need a good video chip.

This laptop comes with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics which eatures 1GB dedicated video memory and up to 3831MB total available video memory (using shared). This chip has 48 CUDA cores and runs at speeds up to 1265 MHz.  It has support for Microsoft DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1 for gaming compatibility.  Dedicated memory means your system can handle more intense graphical processing operations without slowing down the whole system.

If this screen isn’t big enough you can use the HDMI output for connection to an HDTV or HD monitor  and Intel High Definition Audio support with Dolby Home Theater.

A 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive provides the storage space on this system.  It’s only a 5400 RPM drive, which is a disappointment on a laptop that has stronger components elsewhere.  Since this is a Sony machine it of course features a Multiformat media reader which supports Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick PRO Duo with MagicGate functionality. It also features a Secure Digital media slot.

Connectivity comes from Built-in stereo A2DP Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) interface,  the built-in 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T Gigabit Fast Ethernet LAN with RJ-45 connector and the built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n) adapter.

External ports include, 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack, 2 USB 2.0 Ports, 1 (eSATA) port, 1 VGA output, 1 4-pin i.LINK® connection (IEEE 1394), 1 S/PDIF output and 1 internal microphone to use with the Built-in MOTION EYE webcamwith face tracking technology which makes it easy to video chat with family and friends.

Microsoft Windows Home Premium 64-bit is the preinstalled operating system.  Other software includes Microsoft Works SE 9.0, 60-day trial version of Microsoft Home and Student 2007, Norton Internet Security 2010 30-day trial, VAIO Care, Sony® Creativity Suite: PMB – VAIO® Edition – Import, VAIO® Media Gallery, and VAIO® Media plus.

The laptop weighs 6.9 lbs. and measures just 1.6″ thin.  The supplied 5000mAh Lithium-ion battery pack provides up to 3 hours of unplugged operating.

The Sony VAIO laptop with an Intel Core i7 processor (model #: VPCF115FM/B) can be found for around $1350.
