TOSHIBA Qosmio X505-Q888 Laptop with Intel Core i7 Review

The processing power in this laptop is provided by the Intel Core i7-740QM processor. This is a quad-core processor with 8 operating threads.  Each core runs at 1.73 GHz but can rev up to 2.93 GHz with Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology. This is a 64-bit processor with 6MB of Intel SmartCache.  It’s built on a 45nm die and uses 45W. The notebook comes installed with 4GB  of DDR3 memory, and can hold a maximum of 8GB.

The giant screen in this machine is an 18.4” diagonal widescreen TruBrite® TFT LCD display at 1920×1080 resolution. With some quick calculations, you can tell that’s a 16:9 aspect ratio, and the 1080 gives you enough pixels to display 1080p content without a problem.  The screen is driven by the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 360M graphics chip.  The chip has 1GB GDDR5 discrete graphics memory, plus up to 1274MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA® TurboCache™ technology.

For storage you get a 500GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 7200RPM.  The drive is protected by a Toshiba hard drive impact sensor which has 3D sensing.  The optical drive is a Blu-ray Disc® ROM and DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash® supporting 12 formats, so you can play your Blu-ray movies on this instead of your PS3.   The memory card reader supports Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Capacity, Memory Stick™, Memory Stick PRO™, and Multi Media Card formats.

For networking you get a 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter accessible through an RJ-45 port. Just plug in your network cable and go.  For wireless you can use the Wi-Fi wireless networking adapter that supports 802.11 b/g/n.  You also get Bluetooth version 2.1 plus EDR support on this machine, so your Bluetooth mouse will work.

Other features include built-in Harmon Kardon stereo speakers with Dolby Home Theater support, an integrated webcam and microphone for video chat and a flat matte backlit keyboard with full number pad. External ports include 1 RGB monitor output, 1 HDMI-CEC (REGZA LINK), s/p dif output port shared with headphone, microphone input port, ExpressCard slot (ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54), i.Link iEEE-1394 firewire port, and 4 USB 2.0 ports (with one being a eSATA/USB combo.

This laptop comes installed with Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition.  Other software includes Adobe Acrobat Reader, Corel Label@Once, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, Intervideo WinDVD BD, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, Microsoft Windows Media Player 12, Microsoft Silverlight™, Microsoft Live Essentials and a bunch of Toshiba crapware.

The laptop measures 17.4″x11.6″x1.63″/1.83″ (min/max) and weighs 9.7 pounds.  This is a desktop replacement and not a portable machine.  The 12-cell (87Wh) Lithium ion battery pack provides up to 3.78 hours of unplugged power.  Otherwise you can use the included 180W auto-sensing AC adapter.

You can find the Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888 laptop for around $1300.
