Toshiba Satellite A505-S6035 NoteBook

This laptop comes with the Core i7-720QM processor.  This CPU should satisfy your need for speed.  It is a quad-core processor with each core running at 1.6 GHz, and TurboBoost can take it up to 2.8 GHz when you need it.  For those not familiar with Latin that means 4.  This i7 has 6 MB of L3 cache and supports HyperThreading.  It’s a 64-bit CPU (obviously), and built on a 45 nm process.

The display is a 16″ HD TruBrite LCD screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768.  The 16:9 aspect ratio means it’s perfect for 720p HD content.  The graphics engine driving the display is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.The NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics features 1GB dedicated video memory and up to 2747 MB total available video memory (using shared). This chip has 48 CUDA cores and runs at speeds up to 1265 MHz.  It has support for Microsoft DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1 for gaming compatibility.  Dedicated memory means your system can handle more intense graphical processing operations without slowing down the whole system.

The 4GB DDR3 1066MHz memory will help with avoiding slow downs as well, if that’s not enough you can always upgrade it to 8 GB. The 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive is spacious, but runs at a disappointing 5400 RPM.  It would be nice to see at least a 7200 RPM drive in here. The optical drive is a DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash which supports 11 formats. CD-ROM (24x), CD-R (24x), CD-RW (24x), DVD-ROM (8x), DVD-R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVD-R (Double Layer, (6x)), DVD-RW (6x), DVD+R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVD+R (Double Layer, (6x)), DVD+RW (8x), and DVDRAM (5x).

For networking you can use the built-in 10/100 (RJ-45) Ethernet port for wired connectivity, or use the Wi-Fi wireless networking (802.11b/g/n) adapter to connect to your unwired network.  Need some time to relax? Use the built-in 56 KB modem. You can use that networking with the built-in webcam and microphone to do some Skyping with your friends and family around the world.

Other ports on the system include a VGA port, an HDMI port, microphone input port, headphone output port, i.LINK™ IEEE-1394, 4 USB v2.0 ports (3 USB + 1 eSATA/USB combo with USB Sleep and Charge).  Expandability comes from the integrated memory card reader which supports  Secure Digital (SD), Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Multi Media Card, and xD Picture Card.

If you don’t want to use the headphones you can use the built-in harman/kardon stereo speakers while you’re typing on the full keyboard with 10-key numeric keypad.

The system comes installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium.  Other software includes a bunch of Toshiba software you’ll want to immediately uninstall and the ever present Microsoft Works 9.0.

This notebook measures 15.1” x 10.2” x 1.44”/1.61” and weighs in at 6.48 pounds.  It has a 6-cell Lithium ion battery pack (4000 mAh).

It comes with a 1 year parts and labor, and 1 year battery warranty.

The Toshiba Satellite A505-S6035 NoteBook can be found for around $1000.
