Toshiba Satellite (L505-ES5015) Laptop

This Toshiba Satellite notebook comes with an Intel dual-core Pentium processor (model T4400).  This is a common processor in value laptop. The processor has 1 MB of L2 cache and runs at 2.2 GHz. It’s a 64-bit processor with an 800 MHz front-side bus.  This is not the most-recently released i3 processor, and does not have as good of performance as those processors. It is still a powerful processor and should be suitable for most daily tasks. The system comes installed with 3GB of 800GHz DDR3 RAM, and can be expanded to a maximum of 4GB.

This computer has a 15.6″ TFT-LCD high-definition widescreen display with TruBrite technology and 1366 x 768 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio). This screen has native support for 720p resolutions.  The screen is driven by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M with 128-1341MB of dynamically shared graphics memory. The chip has no dedicated graphics memory, but grabs memory from the main system. The chip is compatible with Microsoft DirectX 10, but the shared memory means that it won’t perform the best on the most demanding games out today.

The system comes with a 320 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive. You’d hope for a faster drive, but at this price it’s what you’d expect.  The 320 GB size is a good size with plenty of room for digital pictures, music, games, apps and more.  The optical drive is a multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support which records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media. It also supports DVD-RAM.

You’ve got two choices for easy networking.  First, you have the 10/100 standard Ethernet port (RJ-45). Second, you have the integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking (802.11b/g).  It’s disappointing that this system doesn’t have support for Gigabit wired Ethernet and not even 802.11 n support.  It should at least have one of these. It does come with a modem though, so if you want some throwback Internet without corn syrup, this one’s for you.

The built-in multiformat media reader supports Secure Digital, Memory Stick and MultiMediaCard formats for easy transfer of pictures from your digital camera. This system does not have a webcam or microphone built in, so if you want to do video chatting, this isn’t your laptop. External ports include a VGA port, headphone jack, microphone, 2 speakers, and 3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports (1-eSATA/USB combo port).

The system comes installed with Microsoft Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition.  Other software includes TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor, WildTangent® Orb™ Games Console, Hard disc (HDD) recovery, Microsoft® Works Version 9.0, TOSHIBA DVD Player, Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007 Edition (60-day trial), TOSHIBA Recovery Disk Creator, TOSHIBA Disc Creator, TOSHIBA ConfigFree®, TOSHIBA Face Recognition,Microsoft® Silverlight™ , Norton Internet Security™ 2010 (30-day trial), Microsoft® Windows Live Essentials including Photo Gallery, Messenger, Mail and Writer., TOSHIBA Bulletin Board™, and TOSHIBA ReelTime™

The laptop weighs in at 60 lbs and measures 15.1” x 10.2” x 1.40”/1.55”. It comes with a Li-Ion battery pack (4000mAh, 6-Cell) which can provide up to 2.9 hours of unplugged power and a 65 W auto-sensing AC adapter.

The Toshiba Satellite (L455-ES5015) laptop can be found for around $550.
