Quite Possibly the Worst Book I Ever Read Last night was the first meeting of the Retro Readers (aka The Mother-Daughter and Mr. Briggs Reading Group). This meeting we talked about the two books read over the summer. Now the summer books are lighter fare than the normal books we read during the year. This time it was Behind the Curtain (the sequel to Down the Rabbit Hole) and Twilight. I don't have much to say about Behind the Curtain. It was a simple mystery that was light and entertaining. Twilight on the other hand... If you're not familiar with it, Twilight is the first in a series of vampire-romance novels by Stephanie Meyer. Apparently, it's a runaway success with a movie coming out in the fall. I thought it was quite possibly the worst book I've ever read. I'd go into detail, but an Amazon reviewer already captured my thoughts on the book perfectly. We started off the discussion by each reader noting their favorite character. I passed, and I knew I was in trouble when many of the girls gushed about one character or another. I decided at that point I wasn't going to be a party pooper. I'd keep my opinion to myself. When asked what I thought I deferred. However, the kids encouraged me to share what I thought. I went in how the story was boring, the characters were annoying, and the morals of the story were disgusting. Unsurprisingly, the girls disagreed. The story doesn't end there though. As we talked more about the book, many of the kids echoed my same thoughts about the characters and the morals, but still they loved the book. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion, but I felt a renewed faith in the next generation, knowing that they saw how psychotic and annoying the characters were. By the end, I didn't feel so bad, and was glad I shared my dissenting opinion. There was a new pair at the group, and the only part of the discussion they heard was my distaste for Twilight. I assured them that this was the first book we've read that I didn't like. I'd hate for them to think I was some typical male jerk dissing on the romance novel. I showed off the galley copy of my book, and encouraged them to come up with questions for me at the next meeting so I can practice my interview skills. I imagine after dissing their favorite book, they're going to particularly pointed with their questions. I have more to talk about including more on my quest for the perfect desktop, the pending arrival of the BBook and my insane sleep patterns of the last few days, but this post is already too long. If I get ambitious, I'll make another post today (probably with a pic of me holding the newly minted BBook of Geek). Otherwise, you'll have to wait until tomorrow. That's all I've got for today.
