More Thoughts on the Star Trek Movie

We went to see Star Trek last night. As I posted earlier, I loved it. I want to post some more thoughts on the movie, and hope to keep it spoiler free.

At final count we had ten people in our group. They ranged from 10-40 in age, and went from never having seen any Star Trek at all, to having seen every TOS episode and movie (I wonder who that could be?). In my post-movie survey, everyone thought the movie was great. We went to the 9:45 PM showing of the film on Thursday, which was the fourth showing of the evening. The theater was packed, but not completely sold out.

I loved the movie. I thought it was an excellent restart to the franchise. It shouldered the baggage that comes with Star Trek, and expanded the possibilities.

The characters were recognizable, but not corny impersonations, which was one of my concerns. Certain catchphrases and mannerisms were there, but not distracting. It would be hard to do these characters without them.

The movie mixed the action and humor very well. I enjoyed the "inside jokes," but even the people who had never seen Star Trek before found a lot to enjoy.

The special effects were excellent. There wasn't a moment in the movie where I thought, well this could've been better (like Wolverine's claws).

Let's see how I did on my predictions. (WARNING: Minor spoilerishness ahead). In my trailer review I said:

Kirk will avenge his father's death. Spock will make some droll comments. Bones will get upset with Spock. Kirk will sleep with an alien.

I knocked it out of the park on this getting all of them spot on. As a fan of Star Trek, it probably wasn't too hard to predict, but you take victories where you can get them.

That's all I've got for now. Stay geeky!
