BBspot's Geek Gift Guide 2008

By Brian Briggs

I wrote the book on geek (see below), so I should be qualified to come up with a list of 11 geeky gifts that any geek would be happy to receive this holiday season. Don't BBelieve me? Just buy them all for me and see how happy this geek gets.

It might not be a bad idea to forward this page to the people getting you gifts this year. You don't want to be disappointed when they buy you a gift certificate to Applebee's again.

The BBook of GeekThe BBook of Geek ($20) - I don't mind tooting my own horn. From beginning to end this book is all geek. It's the only book on the market with hexadecimal page numbers. Filled with facts and fictions all about the geek world. From Archimedes to Wil Wheaton this book will have you LOLling around the Christmas tree.

Tube ClockThe Tube Clock ($99) - These clocks have the retro tube style that looks great on any geek's desk. Purchase one assembled or buy a kit and you'll add the added layer of geekiness by having the recipient solder together your gift. It doesn't get much geekier than this.

Swiss Army KnifeMulti-tool ($50-$100) - No geek should be without a multi-tool be it a Swiss Army Knife, Leatherman or SOG model. You might have to ask your geek what tools he or she wants then find the tool that fits the specs. One good model is the Traveler Lite model from Victorinox. It comes with light, pen, altimeter, and timer among the other fine quality tools. It doesn't have a USB drive, but most geeks already have one of those anyway.

XTreme Hard DriveXTreme External Hard Drive ($160-$280) - No geek would turn down more storage space and these external drives from Seagate come in sizes up to 1.5 TB. Not only are these hard drives big and quick, but they're sleek looking too. Isn't it time you started a backup plan for all your "important" files like photos and movies.

MC FrontalotFinal Boss, MC Frontalot ($15) - He looks like a nerd and raps like one too. Pick up the latest CD, Final Boss, from nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot, and laugh while they try to dance to the phat beats. If nerdcore rap isn't your thing, then how about the complete MP3 collection of Jonathan Coulton to keep your geeky booty moving.

Star Trek DVDsStar Trek Movie Collection ($73) - All ten Star Trek movies in a single collection. Each movie contains two discs, one with the complete movie and the other with all the Star Trek extras you desire. It'll be a useful preparatory tool for the upcoming Star Trek movie in May. The even-odd formula predicts that at least five of the movies will be good.

Scientist Action FiguresScientist Action Figures ($20) - This geeky collection of scientists featuring Einstein, Curie, Darwin, Newton and Tesla (all covered in The BBook of Geek) will establish you as a geek to be envied in your office. Recreate your fantasies of Einstein battling Newton or Darwin mooning creationists. The possibilities are endless.

The MunchkingMunchkin ($25) - A simple card game from gaming guru Steve Jackson that simulates an RPG. It's silly and fun, and even non-gamers can enjoy it. Plenty of expansion packs mean the game never gets old and stale. You know you want it.

Slave Leia PosterSlave Leia Poster ($9) - You wanted one as a kid, but your mom wouldn't let you get it. Now that you're all grown up, you just have to convince the significant other that it's only a historical document. It makes a perfect wall decoration for your geeky corner of the house.

LEGO X-WingLEGO X-Wing ($90) - Combine the two geek favorites of Star Wars and LEGO to get this excellent set of LEGO. Not only do you get an X-Wing fighter, but you get mini-figs of Leia, Han, Chewbacca and R2-D2. This will go great with the LEGO Deathstar you already have built down in the basement.

Geek T-ShirtSheldon Shirts - What geek can't use more T-shirts with geeky sayings on them. The Sheldon Shirts site has put together the shirts worn by the characters on the geeky The Big Bang Theory TV show. Whether you like the show or not, you're sure to like some of the shirts.
