BBspot Mailbag

Now you too can enjoy my Inbox without the annoying spam. Every week I get some amazing e-mail. Some amazing because of the sheer cluelessness of the sender, some because of the time and energy that went into crafting them and some are just simply amazing.

BBelievers

If you want to get email from BBspot readers, then just make a mistake in a movie quote - intentionally or unintentionally.

In last week's Mailbag a couple of readers took issue with my statement that the German's bombed Pearl Harbor. I straightened them out by saying:

I know I'm just a dumb American animal, but you should give me more credit than that. I was of course quoting Bill Murray's famous speech in Stripes.

I thought it was a dead giveaway that I knew it was John Belushi in Animal house by using the word "animal" in the comment. Apparently, that wasn't enough. At last count I had over twenty emails pointing out my "mistake."

Most were a bit sheepish after I pointed out my intentions. Several people sent me URLs and snippets from IMDb.com to prove that I was wrong. Others just wanted to make sure I knew it was Belushi. Here are a few samples...

It was John Belushi's speech in Animal House. I think you should go back and watch those again. This is important pop culture here, too important to be left to a faulty memory. -cd

Yup, me and my faulty memory.

You screwed up your own correction.

You are quoting Animal House, not Stripes.

Unless this correction was another “mistake”. If that’s the case, screw you! Lol.

Screw me indeed!

grrrrrr

That was John Belushi's quote about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor....from "Animal House"

just checking, right??

You can never be too careful. You wouldn't want me to be misquoting movies now. I could end up in geek jail!

I think the issue has now been put to rest. You guys realize now, that I know the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and that John Belushi said it was the Germans in Animal house. Just checking, right? Now that we've got that cleared up I'd like to end with one of by favorite quotes from Blade Runner delivered by the incomparable Bruce Willis...

Weekly Limerick

The winner of this year's Geek Limerick contest has volunteered to write a weekly limerick for BBspot. I haven't decided where to put it yet, so this week's I'll put in the Mailbag..

The Da Vinci Code

I guess I don't know my readers as well as I thought I did. At least one of them anyway...

Subject: Da Vinci Code Trailer Review

Hi,

Somehow I missed this trailer review until I came across the link to it in the last mailbag. While reading, I noticed this line from the review in particular:

"...the people who think this is a 'controversial' film. You know who you are, and you don't read BBspot."

I would like to point out three things:

1) I think The Da Vinci Code is controversial,
2) I know who I am, and
3) I read BBspot, regularly in fact.

So perhaps the line should have read: "the people who think this is a 'controversial' film. You know who you are, and at least one of you reads BBspot." Although, now that I write that, I think your line is funnier, if less factual. Again, I guess that's why you're the humor writer and I'm not.

I guess you can feel free to mock me in your next mailbag, or do whatever it is you prefer to do with e-mails from people who take religion seriously.

God help me, how can I mock it now that you've said that?

That's all for this week!
