Keep BBspot Alive, Subscribe

Update 5/12/10:Any new donations for the month of May will go toward a new mobo, CPU and memory to upgrade my AMD Athlon 64 3000+ that BBspotters helped me get 5 years ago. You can read more in this BBlog entry. Thanks!

Update 3/1/10 - Thanks again for your donations! The total for the last period was $600.56. With a down ad month, the donations really helped.

Now onto March. I've had several suggestions that people donating to the site, probably have no problems with the ads on the site, so the prospect of removing ads is not a great motivator. Therefore, I've removed that incentive, and I am trying to think fo something better. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Update 2/14/10: I started accepting donations with the bonus of removing advertisements from the site in the middle of a month, and I have been resetting the counter on the 11th each month. However, this didn't make much sense to me, so for this month I'm extending it until the end of February. From now on, the counter will reset at the beginning of each month.

That means that an extra 17 days are added to this cycle of ad removal. Already, one ad spot has been removed from the site, and we could get another one off the site if donations accelerate. Thanks again for all your help in supporting the site.

Update 1/26/10: The end of the year has come and gone without a change in my situation. I haven't been able to find a job yet, and BBspot has not reached a sustainable level. Until I can find something else to do, I'll continue to do BBspot to at least have some income. Every little bit does help. Thank you very much for your continuted support.

Update 11/12/09: Sorry to bombard you like PBS with this page, but not everybody visits the site on a daily basis. It's also very important for the survival of the site, so I'm willing to be a little bit annoying. Since, posting back in September I've raised $999 (less PayPal fees). Thank you all very much!

Update 4: From 10/11-11/10 BBspot received $162.32 in donations. Thanks everyone!

Update 3: The first month of donations are in, and BBspot received $847.08 in donations. That's freaking awesome! Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Update 2: If you're anti-PayPal or don't want to use them and you still would like to donate. Please email me, and I can give you options. Thanks!

Update: Someone had a question about PayPal fees. From a $1 donation I get to keep around $0.67 from a $2 donation I get $1.64. It's $0.33 for the first $1 and 3% for each additional dollar plus some other weird fees depending on where the donation comes from and what the source is. I can never keep it straight.

Welcome geek! Thank you for checking this page out. I'm Brian Briggs, creator of BBspot.com. I created this site back in April, 2000 and have been entertaining you with geeky humor as my full-time job since 2003. Amazing that the site is now nearing its 10th BBirthday.

In 2008 the economy took a downturn and so did revenue from BBspot. My income was cut in half. We were able to get by, but in 2009 income has dropped almost in half again. This cannot be sustained. Mrs. BBspot and I have had some serious discussions regarding this, and decided to set a do-or-die deadline.

By December 31, 2009, BBspot must be back to a sustainable level or the dream of doing the site as a full time gig evaporates, and probably the site as a whole.

Over the years, BBspot readers have been very generous to me. You helped raise money for my new computer, you donated to Mrs. BBspot for her cancer walk and most recently you helped me retain geek status by paying for my Palm Pre.

To keep BBspot as a functioning entity, I'm asking for your help again. I've set up several donations buttons below at many different levels. What will you get out of it?

First, supporting the arts is important. It's an art form getting the Department of Homeland Security to email you. It's an art form to get people to BBelieve that a Nigerian prince is there to help them, and more.

Second, there are four "ad slots" on the site. I dislike ads as much as you do, so I'd be happy to get rid of them. For every $500 in donations each month I will remove one ad slot from the site. The quicker we get to $2000 each month, the quicker everyone can enjoy the site without ads.

Third, it will allow me to work on BBook 2.0, which I'm sure many of you have been eagerly awaiting.

All in all, it's a great deal.

I do need to reach that level of at least $2000 / month (after Paypal fees) in donation subscriptions to keep Mrs. BBspot happy. That's less than a penny from every one who visits BBspot each month (you know there are lots of moochers on the net, so some of you have to make up for them). BBspot could be enjoyed ad-free and we could keep both of our children. You spend more on gaming than that, and I don't even kill you and sit on your dead corpse.

I'm hoping that things will turn around soon, and working toward making that happen.

Thank you very much for your time and stay geeky!
