The trailer opens with a young boy saying "When someone seems
sad. They don't have any friends. It makes me feel bad for them." I
began to wonder if this was the story of my life. Fortunately it's
not The Life of Brian, but about a psychotic photo-geek named Sy
played by Robin Williams.
Sy is one creepy dude who's probably spent a little too much time
with the dark room chemicals. He's been doing mini-photolab work
for 20 years, which qualifies as a creep right there, but it gets
better (or worse). He also has the same set of ties from when he
started the job. Creepy.
Robin Williams has the man-with-no-friends body language down perfectly,
and after his creepy role in Insomnia you begin to wonder which persona
(comedian or creep) he is in reality.
He knows a bit too much about a family that brings their pictures
in to be developed (why they always use the one hour photo it doesn't
say). He has memorized their address. He comments that they have
a beautiful house. He has a giant wall montage of the family's photos.
As the family starts to get worried, so did I. The guy is close to
the edge.
Something pushes Sy over the precipice because he turns from stalker
to psychotic who thinks he's a part of the family. I'm doubtful they
really want to adopt a 50 year old photo clerk. Sy thinks it's a
good idea. Now things turn
nasty, and the only possible conclusion is that Sy will get permanently
blinded by a flashbulb then fall into a vat of developing solution,
but fortunately the trailer saves that for the big screen.
Now the trailer warns us that the movie is rated R because of sexual
content and language. One can only hope that after the horror of
seeing Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball that Hollywood spares
us any sexual content featuring Robin Williams. We definitely don't
need - Episode 2: Revenge of the Hairbacks.
Conclusion on Trailer: A wonderful creep-fest which will accelerate
sales of digital cameras. A great performance by Robin Williams makes
this worth the download.
Conclusion on Movie: What Jaws did for beaches, this movie will
do to one hour photo labs.
