BBspot Trailer Awards

By Brian Briggs

This year marks the Sixth year of the BBspot Trailer Awards. Twenty-seven trailers are vying for the awards this year. It was a good year for bad trailers, so the trailer joining past winners; Delta Farce, Deuce Bigalow and The Cat in the Hat, will be a worthy candidate. And, after this brief musical number saluting white actors in kung fu comedies, I'll get right to the awards...

Worst Trailer of the Year

The nominees are...

Speed Racer - Here's what I said: "You’ve got more ninjas, and then a monkey with sunglasses.  Ouch. Please make it stop."

Untraceable - Here's what I said: "I'm sure doctors have the same "No way" moments watching medical dramas that geeks have watching "cyber thrillers."  Those moments when you say to yourself, "WTF? That couldn't happen," or at least the medical equivalent. This trailer has many of those moments, and that's not a good sign."

Twilight - Here's what I said: "I don't come into this review with a shred of objectivity.  If you're a regular reader, you'll know that I consider Twilight to be one of the worst books I've ever read.   This trailer does nothing to change that opinion. "

There was no stand alone stinker like Deuce Bigalow or Pokemon Heroes, but Untraceable was the worst...

The call is coming from inside the car!

Jason Statham Award for Bad Acting

Jason Statham in In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale - You can hardly blame Statham for his ghastly acting, since it was under the direction of Uwe Boll, but I will anyway. His "inspirational" speech at the end of the trailer couldn't inspire a coked-up MMA fighter to battle. He managed to keep his shirt on for the entire trailer at least.

Jason Statham in Death Race - Statham earned this nomination for his unconvincing performance of a NASCAR driver. To his credit, he once again managed to keep his shirt on for the entire trailer.

Jason Statham in Transporter 3 - Reprising his role as Frank the Transporter, Statham drives his performance to a lower level than ever before. He delivers his retorts with the comic skills of Carrot Top. I knew he couldn't keep his shirt on for all of them.

And the Spottie goes to...

Bad Actor

Worst Trailer Based on the Worst Book I Ever Read

Albeit a very narrow criteria for nominees, this just happened to be the year that the movie Twilight was made. Coincidence?

Twilight - It makes you want to gouge out Edward's smoldering eyes with a hot poker.

Best Trailer of the Year

The nominees are...

The Dark Knight - A great performance by Heath Ledger as The Joker steals the trailer, and makes this a nominee.

Iron Man - Great action, great special effects and a great soundtrack make this one excellent trailer.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - While the movie didn't deliver, the trailer was top notch for this sequel.

These three great heroes battled it out in the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny and finally a winner emerged to claim the Spottie...
